When you use our skills, you talk to Alexa. This voice input is sent to Amazon, which then maps the phrase to an “intent” so we know what our skill should do for you. This is absolutely necessary for our service to give you an appropriate answer. We do not receive the audio of your voice.
We do not require or share personal data with our skills.
To improve our services we may analyse automatically how often utterances are spoken and other analytics. This is done automatically by Amazon in the Amazon Developer Portal.
For some of our skills it is necessary to save data for you in our databases. This data is only connected to your Alexa-User Id but never to your name or any other personal information.
We do not require any kind of account linking or geolocation.
In some of our skills, you may have the option to say “my name is John” (for example). This is simply to make the skill more friendly as many people prefer to be greeted as “Good morning, (name)”. This is only your first name, is entirely voluntary, is not required for the use of the skill, and may be changed, or deleted at any time by saying “clear my name”.
Some of our skills may offer you the option to find services in a particular area. You may be invited to give the name of a town, city or region, but this can be anywhere in the UK and does not link you to a particular address, street, postcode etc. The most we can even know about you is that someone who said they were interested in Sheffield ended up listening to Sheffield talking newspaper.
No payment is required from the end user to enable and use any of our Alexa skills. In some circumstances, we may have received payment to develop and maintain a particular Alexa skill, but no paid subcription is required from the end user.
The words “subscription” and “subscribe”
As noted in our general terms, we are not responsible for the content, which is provided by a range of organisations and charities from across the UK. Occasionally, you may read or hear us, or one of the service providers, talking about “subscribing” to their service or podcast. This is a term generally used to mean “adding a feed to your podcast software”, and unless explicitly stated, does not mean a paid subscription. Talking Newspaper Services do not charge end users to enjoy the audio provided by other organisations but enabled by our services.
